The Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB) is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as the accrediting agency for first-professional baccalaureate and master's degree programs in landscape architecture in the United States. ASLA is a member of the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors.

The Board of Trustees of the American Society of Landscape Architects recognizes the quality of educational programs leading to first professional degrees in landscape architecture at the bachelorís or masterís level accredited by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects Accreditation Council. It regards the criteria for accreditation and many of the individual program guidelines to be comparable to those employed by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board of the ASLA. A list of CSLAAC accredited programs follows the LAAB list. LAAB accredits 43 programs leading to baccalaureate degrees and 28 leading to masterís degrees.

Accreditation is a non-governmental, voluntary system of self-regulation. Its heart is the concept of self-evaluation. ASLA accreditation evaluates each program on the basis of its stated objectives and compliance to externally mandated minimum standards. The program conducts a self-study to evaluate how well it is meeting its educational goals. LAAB then provides an independent assessment which determines if a program meets accreditation requirements. Programs leading to first-professional degrees at the bachelor's and master's level are eligible to seek ASLA accreditation. Others such as pre-professional and advanced professional landscape architecture programs are outside the scope of LAAB, as they have different educational objectives.

Each program's accreditation review dates are indicated as follows:

LR (last review); IR (initial review); NR (next review). The program's accreditation status is full unless otherwise noted.

Full Accreditation: Granted when all standards are met and as a result, the continued overall quality of the program and its conformance to accreditation standards is likely.

Provisional: Granted when one or more standards are met with weakness and the cited deficiencies are such that continued overall program quality and conformance to standards are uncertain.

Initial Accreditation: Granted on a first review when all standards are at least minimally met and the program's continued development in quality and conformance to the accreditation standards is likely.

LARE Review Update

LARE is changing to an all computer exam. Here is a quick synopsis of the changes:

  1. The exam will consist of 4 sections, all of which will be administered at computer test centers and will make the exam more accessible for candidates.
  2. The content currently tested in graphic format will, in the new exam, consist of multiple-choice questions and advanced item types. Advanced item types require candidates to work with on-screen graphics. Examples of these new item types will be available in Spring 2012.
  3. There will be two administrations of the current Multiple-choice exams (September 2011 and March 2012) and two administrations of the current Graphic exams (December 2011 and June 2012) prior to the transition to the new exam.
  4. We are encouraging new candidates to take Sections A & B of the current exam as they will translate directly to Sections 1 and 2 in the new exam.
  5. Additionally taking Sections A & B now will have financial benefits as well because the cost per section of the new exam will be higher as the development costs are spread over 4 sections versus 5 in the current exam.
  6. Sections C, D, and E transference is not clear to me at this time, but I have a question into CLARB and will clarify in another email.

For additional information on the transition, visit the CLARB website. For further assistance, CALL 571-432-0332 or by email at info@clarb.org. You can also participate in their Facebook discussions.

Also LAND (ASLA's web letter) has provided a good bit of information: http://www.asla.org/land/LandArticle.aspx?id=32227 on the timeline.
